fall dinner
So we went to the Fall Benefit Turkey Dinner at the Methodist Church tonight. It was very crowded. The food was very good, actually. The tables were all manned by golden girls and their grandchildren, including my mom and my nephew, James.
James is a serious kid of almost 12, and he works very hard. I hardly ever get to see him even though he lives in the same town as I. Anyway it was great to see him tonight. We were sitting next to a nice family, a single mom and three girls. They were very well behaved. And serious too.
I wonder about these serious kids. They're too grown up. Seen too much divorce. Heartbreak or whatever.
Then there was a chatty Kathy whom I knew vaguely. She talked about herself from the moment she sat down till the moment we left. I happen to know her son is a narcissist as well. I used to work with him.
After the single mom left, no one was friendly around us. But we weren't very friendly either. I packed up most of my meal and took it home with me. I gave my mom a hug. She seems so tiny and temporary to me somehow. What will I do without her?
When we left we saw the ticket seller was huddling out in the cold. He's 94 years old. It was dark. The church is losing members. It's membership is aging. Why are not all of us who come to eat not at worship on Sundays?
