pilgrimage

So I think I mentioned that I'm going on a trip to Seattle. But this is really a pilgrimage which is defined as a trip to a sacred place. Not that Seattle's not great and everything but I'm really going there to honor a friendship that is almost as old as I am. Elyce and I are like sisters and we were inseprable from elmentary school through college and beyond. Then we both moved to the mainland, that great separator of island friends. We both had one son but they don't even now each other! Mine is nearly 27 and Elyce's son is 16.

Elyce saved me from the fabled "kill hoale day" which was everyday of Island public school. I only got really attacked once when Elyce went off to Disneyland and a boy named Jon Inafuku tried to beat me up for "acting wise" which meant being a smart alec. Which I was. He managed to kick me into the facet where the janitors filled up their mop bucket, and I got a little bit wet. Then my other hoale friend shouted, "Elyce is coming," and he ran away.

The great part about this story is that years later when I was married, I got in line behind Jon Inafuku at Safeway, and I towered above him! He never grew since the fifth grade! And I'm only five foot-two!

But that's really beside the point. Elyce was an only child but she was tough and even just envoking her name brought results. She is a super talented musician. And became the girl singer for a very popular band called the Pagan Babies. So I spent many nights in the bar where they played.

But words can't come close to describing our friendship which depended on so many lunches out at King's Bakery chatting about boys and other girls and clothes and jewelry. I have missed her so much over the last twenty year that typing this is making me cry. We have so much to talk about and only a week! More soon.
