living the dream
So basically my childhood dream was to be a ballerina. So much for that. But I'm still facinated by people who are living their dreams. I got a call from my sister Nancy today. And she's living her dream. She and her husband have bought a four acre farm not far from downtown Portland. They are in the process of building into a center for the community not unlike a Balinese water temple.
They have even created a mission statement for their project focusing on conservation, farming and community. They are busy building community partnerships and even in the midst of restructuring many of the main buildings managed to host a big fund raiser event for a non-profit.
I own an acre that could potentially be a farm but I'm just not the gardening type. I do have a prime directive about the property which is: don't cut down the trees. Even when they're right up against the building. Everywhere that Steven and I lived before we got this place, the landlord cut down a big tree. It used to make Steven cry when he was little. So I promised him that when we found our own place we'd never cut the trees.
But the big beautiful trees drop lots of debris which make the property hard to maintain. And I'm just not in shape enough to keep things in order. Maybe that will be my goal for this spring. One thing I know is that I will not cut down the trees. And they are magnificent. And they are part of living my adult dream which is something about living in a cabin in the woods, being creative.
